Overview of Treatment of MCL (Knee)

Treatments of MCL injury depends on grade of torn MCL fibres and extend of damage of structures supporting inner aspect of knee like superficial, deep MCL and posterior oblique ligament. MCL has tendency to heal on its own, as opposite to other knee ligaments complete tears.
Non – Surgical
MCL Sprain,  partial or isolated superficial ligament tear are usually treated with knee immobilization in brace for few weeks followed by rehab program.
Surgical treatment
When  there is complete MCL injury with instability symptoms or complex injury with other knee ligament tear then needs surgical treatment. Torn ligament is repaired to bone with  suture anchors  or repair is augmented using hamstring tendon graft. Complex injury – (combined ligament injury) needs treatment from Knee Specialist.

Conventionally combined ligament injury was treated in two stages – MCL ligament was repaired / augmented with open surgery in first stage and then after 2 months arthroscopic cruciate ligament reconstruction is done.

Now a days it’s possible to treat MCL and other injured ligament in one time (single stage) All the injured ligaments are treated in single operation (open + Arthroscopic). Single stage treatment for multiple knee ligament injuries is usually done in referral centers,  as it needs  highly skilled team work. Before surgery Dr. Abhijit Ranaware will discuss in detail about auto graft harvest sites and various implant options for multiple ligament reconstruction. Dr. Abhijit Ranaware, Knee and Sports Surgeon in Pune is highly experienced to treat MCL  and complex knee ligament injury with single stage minimally invasive surgery technique and helps athletes to returning back to sports activity.

Post-operative rehab

After surgery patient is suggested to apply ice and brace is given for initial few weeks. Patient is discharged from hospital within one or two days depending on type of repair.  It is strongly recommended to undergo in-house supervised Physiotherapy. Post-op Physiotherapy is aimed to restore knee movement and strength of muscles which is very important to achieve best results.
