Overview of Shoulder Arthrtitis

Wear and tear of the joint is called arthritis. Though more common in lower limb weight bearing) joints like knee and hip joints it can happen in shoulder as well. Shoulder joint wear leads to break down of cartilage (Soft covering of end of bones at joint) and then exposed bone rub on each other which causes pain and restricts movements. Arthritis can occur either in Glenohumeral joint (glenoid socket and upper humerus head) or  in AC Joint between collar bone and acromion bony process of blade of scapula.

Joint degeneration can be

  • Primary (aging process).
  • Secondary  - due to trauma, rotator cuff tears and previous surgery.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis.
  •  

Symptoms of arthritis are –

  • Shoulder pain.
  • Restriction of movements affecting activities of daily living.
  • History of previous fractures or operations.

How is the Shoulder Arthritis diagnosed?

After history taking and clinical examination of patient Dr. Ranaware will advise basic investigations like:
X-rays – to see for stage and cause of shoulder arthritis.
Routine blood tests – to rule out other causes of arthritis like rheumatoid arthritis.
