Treatment of an AC joint separation depends on injury grade (severity), if associated with acromioclavicular joint pain (chronic injury) and patient’s functional activity level.
Lower grade AC joint injuries (minimal separation) are treated with a non-surgical approach that includes rest, arm sling, medications, and physical therapy rehab program. Once pain is reduced and proper physiotherapy patient returns to normal activities within 2-6 weeks.
A surgical procedure may be recommended by Dr. Abhijit Ranaware in higher grade injuries. An open AC joint stabilization procedure is generally performed by Dr. Abhijit Ranaware to reduce the separation between the acromion and clavicle bones.
Acute Injuries (<3 weeks): Â the separated joint is reduced to anatomical position and held by strong tape or hook plate, then ligaments usually heals with fibrosis (scaring).
