Shoulder joint – inflamed biceps tendon

Overview of Treatment of Biceps Tendonitis (Shoulder)

Non-Surgical treatment
Biceps tendonitis is usually treated by rest, local icing and ultrasound therapy sometimes with local corticosteroid injection.
Surgical treatment
If no relief with nonsurgical treatment patient will have to undergo arthroscopic or mini-open surgery for biceps tendonitis. Biceps tendinitis is commonly associated with aging (wear and tear), rotator cuff tear, trauma, bony spur and arthritis. So arthroscopic biceps tenotomy or tenodesis is the most common adjunct procedure, usually done along with shoulder surgery planned to treat other shoulder pathology and treating surgeon is assured that patient won’t have any residual shoulder pain after surgery.

The damaged part of the biceps tendon (pain generator) is removed from its origin from inside joint and remaining tendon is reattached to the upper arm bone (humerus) or muscles, done arthroscopic or mini-open.

In more severe cases where the tendon is so damaged it cannot be repaired, Dr. Abhijit Ranaware may just release the damaged tendon from its attachment site; this procedure is known as biceps tenotomy. Dr. Abhijit Ranaware, Shoulder and Arthroscopy Surgeon in Pune is highly experienced to treat biceps tendonitis and rotator cuff tear with minimally invasive surgery technique and helps patients in returning to a healthy and active lifestyle.
